Jersey Water is advising customers to prepare
for what weather experts are saying could be one of the coldest winters
in many years.
The Company is advising people that a few simple precautions
can take the headache out of unexpected burst pipes, and subsequent damage
to homes, and wasted water, associated with freezing conditions.
They advise:
| • |
Find the main water
stop valve in the house, and make sure it works; in case the water
supply has to be turned off in an emergency. |
| • |
To insulate all pipe work
and storage cisterns in unheated areas such as lofts, roofs, outbuildings
and garages. |
| • |
If anyone is going away
for a short period, leaving the central heating on a low thermostat
setting will reduce the risk of frost damage. |
| • |
If the period away from
the house it longer, Jersey Water recommends consumers take advice
from their plumber on how best to protect a property from potential
water damage. |
Managing Director and Engineer, Howard Snowden,
commented:
“We are advising customers to act now
to protect their property before the weather
worsens. These few simple steps, such as proper
insulation and knowing where stop valves are
in case of an emergency, are useful in any
case, but can prove invaluable when faced
with the problem of frozen or burst pipes.
Our website www.jerseywater.je also provides
hints and tips on how best to safeguard water
supplies as winter draws nearer.”
