Different careers we offer
Leakage Detection Technician
As a Leakage Detection Technician, you’ll play a vital role in protecting Jersey’s precious water supplies. Using specialist technology such as acoustic listening devices, pressure loggers, flow data and correlation equipment, you’ll track down leaks hidden across the Island’s water network. Once you’ve pinpointed a leak, you’ll mark its location so our repair teams can get to work. Sometimes you’ll even help customers identify leaks on their own pipes, making a real difference to households and businesses.
This is a hands-on, outdoor role that requires initiative, attention to detail and confidence using maps, navigation tools and IT systems. You’ll prepare risk assessments, maintain your equipment, and report your findings clearly to the wider team. No two days are the same. You could be walking a section of rural mains one day and working in town the next.
A day in the life experience
If you enjoy detective work, problem-solving and want to help reduce water loss on the Island, a day shadowing our leakage team will give you a taste of this fascinating career.
Production Technician and Operations Controller
The water supply team is at the heart of Jersey Water, making sure the Island has a safe and reliable supply every single day. Within this team we’re highlighting just two of many key roles: Production Technician and Operations Controller.
Production Technicians focus on the practical side of treatment works and reservoirs. They operate pumps, filters, and dosing equipment, carry out maintenance, take samples, and keep all systems running smoothly. It’s hands-on work that combines engineering know-how with a strong focus on safety and quality.
Operations Controllers, meanwhile, oversee the bigger picture. Working on a shift rota, they use software to monitor and control the network in real time, from water treatment plants to the desalination plant. They respond to alarms, analyse operational data, and act as first responders when faults occur, ensuring that the supply is never compromised.
A day in the life experience
Spending a day following the water supply team you could spend time in the control room, follow technicians through routine plant checks, and see how the roles work together to deliver safe, clean water to every home and business in Jersey.
Laboratory Technicians and Water Quality Samplers
Laboratory Technicians and Water Quality Samplers are vital to ensuring Jersey’s water is always safe, clean and reliable. Working as part of the same team, samplers travel across the Island to collect water from reservoirs, treatment works, supply zones and even customer properties. In the lab, technicians analyse these samples using microbiological, chemical and physical tests, preparing reagents, calibrating equipment and recording accurate results. Together, these roles provide evidence that safeguards public health and ensures compliance with strict water quality standards.
This is a career path for people who are precise, curious, and passionate about science and quality. You’ll learn how to follow procedures, work safely and independently, and apply scientific thinking to real-world problems. Whether you’re out in the field or in the lab running complex tests, you’ll be making a direct contribution to the Island’s health and wellbeing.
A day in the life experience
Spending a day with the water Quality team you could accompany a sampler on site, shadow laboratory testing, and see how data guides decisions across Jersey Water’s operations.
Meter Reading Technician
Meter Readers are essential in making sure customers are billed fairly and Jersey Water can manage the Island’s resources effectively. You’ll visit homes and businesses to record meter readings, using handheld devices to capture and upload data accurately. Along the way, you may also investigate anomalies, check for potential leaks, and help resolve meter queries.
This is a practical, customer-facing role that suits people who enjoy working independently, being outdoors and paying close attention to detail. You’ll follow planned routes, interpret data, and represent Jersey Water in the community, often being the friendly face of the company that customers see most.
A day in the life experience
If you shadow an experienced reader for a day, be prepared for an early start. You’ll follow a pre-planned route and see how data is gathered and reported. It’s a varied and interesting role with a mix of technology and people skills that has a direct impact on fairness, transparency and water efficiency across the Island.
MEICA Engineer (Mechanical, Electrical, Instrumentation and Control Automation)
The role of the MEICA Engineer is one of the most varied and technically exciting careers at Jersey Water. Working across treatment works, pumping stations and the Island’s distribution network, you’ll ensure that the equipment and systems powering our water supply are reliable, efficient and safe.
This role blends hands-on engineering with advanced technology. You’ll install and maintain pumps, motors, sensors and dosing systems, while also working with automation tools such as PLCs, variable speed drives and control systems. Diagnosing faults, commissioning new equipment and fine-tuning automated processes are all part of the job that helps us reduce downtime, improve efficiency and maintain compliance with strict standards.
MEICA Engineers are problem-solvers with a continuous improvement mindset. You’ll work independently as well as in close collaboration with production, network and lab teams, supporting both day-to-day maintenance and major capital projects.
A day in the life experience
A day with the MEICA team could include shadowing routine maintenance, seeing control systems in action, and learning how engineering expertise underpins the Island’s water supply.
