Free water butts and education talks to encourage schools to save water

We’re expanding our water saving initiatives by offering every Island school a free water butt and an educational talk on water conservation and water quality.

Launched during international Water Saving Week (4-8 May), our latest campaign focuses on practical action to help schools save water and education to encourage young Islanders to adopt water saving habits from an early age.

We have offered all Island schools a free water butt to collect and use rainwater for watering their gardens and grown produce, rather than use mains drinking water. Over the coming months, Jersey Water will visit schools to deliver interactive sessions on where water comes from, why the Island is vulnerable to drought, and how everyday actions can help protect water supplies and ensure more water is left in the natural environment, where it is needed most.

Following one of the driest Aprils on record, Water Saving Week is a timely reminder for everyone living in Jersey to take steps to reduce their water use. To help schools save water, Jersey Water is providing free water butts so that pupils can collect and use rainwater for watering their gardens and grown produce, instead of treated drinking water.

Mark Bowden, Head of Water Resilience, said:

“Helping the Island to save water isn’t about one campaign or one day. It’s about building habits that last. Our recent water saving campaigns have already reportedly made a difference, with around 40% of our customers telling us that they’ve changed the way they use water as a result.

Working with schools is a positive step to reinforcing our messaging around using water wisely. We hope that by giving pupils practical tools and knowledge, we can help make water saving part of everyday life, both at school and at home to reinforce those behaviours right across the Island.”

More than 15 schools have already taken us up on our offer of a free water butt, with educational talks being planned throughout the year.
