Jersey Water Bursary Award Success

Jersey Water is pleased to announce that their Bursary Award for 2016 has been awarded to Rachel Hayden.  Formally Head Girl at Jersey College for Girls, Rachel will be studying Civil Engineering at the University of Bath.  Whilst studying for her A Levels, Rachel ran a global female engineering competition through the International Women’s Academy, to promote women in engineering. Following this she was shortlisted for the National Women’s Engineering Awards and has now been made an ambassador for the International Women’s Academy.

Rachel commented “I feel incredibly fortunate to have received the Jersey Water Bursary which will help me fund my university studies and give me the opportunity to gain some invaluable work experience.”

Jersey Water would also like to congratulate Lauren McCarthy, a previous Bursary Award recipient, who has recently graduated from Bristol University with a Master’s in Chemistry.

Reflecting on her bursary experience at Jersey Water, Lauren commented “Throughout my time working in the Jersey Water laboratory, I gained invaluable experience, which extended beyond practical skills. I gained an insight into the day-to-day running of an industrial lab by taking part in every step from sample collection, to chemical testing and analysis. I found my exposure to this environment particularly useful throughout my final year Master’s project and I know I have built skills which I will carry through to my future career.”

The Jersey Water Bursary is now in its 8th year and is designed to assist local students embarking on an undergraduate degree course in a subject relevant to the supply of water (including engineering, chemistry, environmental sciences, water resources, management and conservation).  The Award provides funding for one successful applicant each year towards the cost of study for the duration of their time at university.  As well as financial assistance, Jersey Water also offers a paid work experience programme during holiday periods.
